Barry Levinson the director and writer of Avalon does a fantastic job to give a historically accurate insight to the hardships that a European immigrant family might face when immigrating to America in the early 1900's. The main character Sam Krichinsky enters the USA as the major influx of immigration into the USA came to an end. As the movie opens he is placed walking down the streets of Baltimore on the fourth of July in udder shock and disbelief of what lay before him, the immense buildings, the bright lights, the fireworks, and the chaos of a city in full motion. Taking in all of these things at once is very overwhelming for a new comer such as Sam. Sam as most immigrants of the time did not make his journey with out a final destination, he came to the country in anticipation of living with his four brothers, which was very common of most immigrants to live with family and work with them. These four brothers start a wallpaper hanging business; wallpaper hanging is very tedious and very physically demanding in order for to be done well.
