Practitioners and scholars of public relations have struggled to accurately define the field and establish its credibility as a valid social science since industry founders, such as Edward Bernays, began coining the profession during the early 20th century. Since that time, a myriad of terms, practices, metaphors and labels have been used to describe the profession and its activities, ranging from, "lawyer in the court of opinion," to "news engineer," and even "devil's advocate" (Hutton and Goodman 248). Today, "reputation management" appears to be redefining what has been conventionally referred to as "public relations," while also serving as a new, guiding philosophy in corporate communications departments. If communications professionals cannot determine a basic definition and purpose for their activities, they will continue to lack the needed philosophical framework and methods to adequately explain and evaluate their contributions in the workplace.
