With close reference to at least TWO short stories you have studied, discuss how we learn about important human truths. Miss Brill and Her First Ball, both written by Katherine Mansfield are two short stories that give the reader an insight into important human truths. The two stories share a common theme of illusion vs. reality. The idea behind the two stories is homogenous but the events happen from two extremes of the age scale. In both the short stories the female characters' illusions are shattered by male characters. This lives up to the human truth that woman are subject to male dominance and intimidation. Miss Brill is about an elderly woman who loves to sit in the park and watch the world play out around her - "it was like a play, exactly like a play." Miss Brill's illusion consists of her own world where she believes that she plays an important part in the world when in reality no one takes any notice of her. At the end of the play she is confronted by two children, of which the male brutally insults her. The young boy states, "Why does she come here at all - who wan......
