Dewey Decimal System Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
The Dewey Decimal System is a system used to organize books on the shelves of libraries everywhere. The Dewey Decimal System is the common way of saying the Dewey Decimal Classification or the DDC. The DDC makes it easy to look up book's place in a library, whether it is in a catalog in filing cabinets or on the computer. Look up the book by title, author and even subject and you are given a Dewey number. You then go to the group of similar numbers and look for your book. The first time the DDC was published was in 1876 and was edited by Melvil Dewey (hence the name). Since new books are written all the time, the DDC has been revised about once every one to four years until 1952 (Dewey 15r - the 15th Edition Revised, edited by a G. Dewey). Since then it has been revised about once every seven to ten years. The last revision was done in 2003 (Dewey 22 by Joan S. Mitchell. The Online Computer Library Center maintains the classifications, and publishes new editions. The web edition is constantly getting updated, and announces any changes on a monthly basis.
