Piagets Stage Theory; A Critical Evaluation of his Pre-operational and Concrete-operational Stages Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Abstract
A study was conducted to assess how well Piagetian tasks measure cognitive abilities in Pre-operational children and to determine whether modifying standard Piagetian tasks improves performance. The participant, Lily, completed a series of three standard tasks; Mass conservation, number conservation & class-inclusion, followed by two modified tasks; number conservation & class-inclusion. Results indicated that the three standard tasks were failed, theoretically placing Lily in the pre-operations stage, however she passed one of the modified versions. This discrepancy in performance was attributed to confounding variables including; social context, language, perception, memory, and attention that potentially inhibited performance in the standard task. In contrast, modification of the class-inclusion task did not elicit improved performance. It was concluded that irrespective of task, modification makes the assessment more accurate and under certain conditions may improve performance.
