Abstract Functional localisation is concept that refers to the practice of assigning specific brain parts/areas with distinct functions. Such bold claims have, in the past been supported by neural lesion studies, and presently, evidence from advanced neural-imaging technologies contribute to the interpretation of structure/function relationships. This essay critiques past investigations into functional topography and contemporary arguments for and against localisation of function, with an emphasis on the association cortices. It is well recognised that functions can, to an extent be localised. However predominance of one function does not negate multimodal abilities of localised regions. Neuronal plasticity and individual variance have also been identified as factors preventing absolute functional localisation. It will be argued that ascribing neural functions to anatomically distinct areas has clinical and educational value, however accuracy diminishes with increasing specificity.
