John Lockes second treatise Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

John Locke's 1689 Second Treatise on Civil Government explained Locke's thoughts on maintaining successful administration in a country. He wrote about basic rights of citizens, and control of political societies. His most famous political theory was that of the 'Social Contract.' The basic idea of this plan was that all members of a community agree to be governed, and to sacrifice certain rights for the general good of the society, so that everyone was united and felt secure with their political power. Locke believed that men were, by nature, born free and independent, meaning every person was a law unto themselves. That meant that they couldn't be subjected to political power without their own consent. Since every individual had consented being part of the community, they have the power, and the will to act as a whole. By consenting to be in the community, the man is obliged to be a part of it, and to support what the general will is, for his fellow citizens. He sacrifices some sovereign rights, but receives protection and organization, since they now have a third party to help s......
