Debbie Westbury - Australian Poet Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Debbie Westbury is an Australian poet from Wollongong. She bases most of her poems about her experiences in her lifetime and peoples dreams being unfulfilled because of different events. Westbury uses the style 'free verse' with all her poems. The poems " Mouth to Mouth", "Shells" and "Coffee and Rain" all have similar themes such as wartime, trauma and the power of the mind to share our reflections. "Mouth to Mouth" is mainly about refugees escaping an unnamed country in South East Asia. Westbury uses many similes in this poem for example 'where the pirates waited like jackals'. In "Mouth to Mouth", Westbury is portraying what happened in the time of this was, she explains the destruction and mayhem going on while these people are trying to escape their country and the difficulties they will have to face later on in the poem; the second part of this poem. Westbury explains the terrors of refugee camps, and the people in the cams wonder what will become of them now, considering they have now lost everything, 'no that your factory was burnt... and your children drowned' Wes......
