1.The text and text types.
The word text is used to refer to any passage, spoken or written, of whatever length, that forms a unified whole. A text is a unit of language in use. A text has always a purpose (informing, describing, persuading) and the purpose is defined by a context, referring to all extralinguistic factors which have some bearing on the text itself and is addressed to a receiver than can be just one or several, active or passive, present or not-present.
Taking into account these factors, we can talk about 6 different types of texts:
Narrative text: is a text in which the writer communicates information about phenomena within a framework of time.
Descriptive text: is a text which says what a person or a thing is like. We focus on items seen from a spacial point of view.
Expository text: its aim is to explain, clarify.
Argumentative text: deals with problems and controversial ideas. Reasons for or against some topic are put forward.
Instructive texts: the writer tells the reader/audience what to do. The instructive text type is based on the action-demanding se......
