Abstract:
In this paper, we evaluate the performance of selected mutual funds in relation to skill selection and performance persistence. We argue that Morningstar ratings assigned to funds are an indication of past performance and that even the 5 star rated funds do not return persistently high abnormal returns through Jensen's alpha. On a whole, we discovered that with the exception of one 5 star rated Morningstar fund; it was not possible over a period of 174 months to outperform the market with persistence.
Introduction:
The purpose of this study was to investigate if the Morningstar ratings assigned to ten funds accurately portrayed their returns and if these fund managers showed persistence and skills, either individually or collectively in an equally weighted portfolio. The research question is four-part: which, if any fund managers displayed selection skill and performance persistence and if collectively the funds displayed persistence in performance and if they added value either individually or collectively.
