The wild coast, an area close to 300 kilometres, runs along the east coast of Africa. It was formerly part of the Transkei, but since 1994 was reincorporated into the Eastern Cape Province. Amongst the awesome beauty of the wild coast. This essay will look at specifically the Xolebeni people (in the Amadiba region) and their various struggles. Sen ( 1999) identifies five basic "freedoms" that summarise all aspects of poverty, and will be looking at how the development programs in the area are suppose to be helping to fend off the rising poverty. These development strategies may help in the short run resulting in immediate poverty relief, but can cause long term issues as well, and this needs to be looked at.
The two development strategies that will be looked at, and compared against each other is the sand dune mining, implemented by the mining company Mineral Commodities Ltd. And eco tourism.
