Misery, by Anton Chekhov, is appropriately titled as it tells the story of a father's agony over his recently deceased son. Iona is undergoing a great deal of grief, loneliness, sadness and misery. Throughout the story, Iona looks unsuccessfully for someone to share his despair with. In the end, Iona's most trustful companion, his mare, becomes his listening ear and Iona finds comfort and recovery from his grief that couldn't be found with another person. Chekhov effectively uses the elements of tone and dialog among characters to create a miserable atmosphere which portrays the darkness and isolation of human suffering along with the insensitivity and lack of compassion of others that so often accompanies it.
The dreary, miserable tone of the story is set from the beginning as it takes place on a dark, cold, snowy evening. The reader can vividly picture the main character through his introduction, "Iona Potapov, the sledgedriver, is all white like a ghost.
