Humourous, Bleak Childhood
Frank McCourt has a terrible childhhod: his mother is always sad and defeated and his father drinks away any money he receives. In the novel, Frank recounts his story but uses humourous episodes and experiences to try and compensate for the bleakness of his childhood.
The McCourt family have very different lives in America and when they immigrate to Ireland they realize what they have been deprived of. I see a toilet that flushes, for example, as a bare necessity whereas the boys do not even know what a chamber pot is when they stay at Malachy's parents' home. In Ireland in the 1940s, a chamber pot was not a luxury but Frank sees it as one and is uncomfortable using it to relieve himself.
Frank's family suffer under terrible living conditions. I feel great pity for them as they are always cold and hungry and have to share a lavatory with the whole lane. I cannot even begin to understand what it must be like to have to share an outside lavatory with other families. This is one of the reasons for the high rate of disease.
