If I had not been worried about being late, if I had taken the time to tie my shoelace, if I had walked instead of running, it would never have happened. Looking back now, it is easy to see how it could have been avoided. But typically, I did worry, I did run and I did not see the boy in front of me until it was too late. There was impact, a minor collision really, but enough to send me crashing to the floor and enough to shatter my left arm.
It was five past one the bell had rung at one o'clock for the end of lunch. I had been busy, rehearsing the school play when it sounded. With the benefit of hindsight, I am sure that my teacher would have understood if I had been a few minutes late for registration, but, when you are ten years old, your confidence in the kindness of your teachers is less secure. I decided to hurry; a poor decision.
