Prison has been one of the longest running solutions to crime. Prisons have inmates in ranges of short term non violent to the most predatory and dangerous criminals. Prison is a good place to keep the criminals off the streets, such as murders, rapists, those who induce physical harm and abuse on other, sex offenders and other dangerous and harmful criminals. For those first time non violent not so serious crimes, there are alternative or intermediate sanctions rather the simple few years of incarceration. Those simple years of incarceration can worsen the offender by teaching him or her new ways of being a criminal from other inmates or even invoke harm on them when not knowing how to deal with dangerous inmates.
