Australian Literature: Lawson, Baynton and Fullerton Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The 1880s in Australia marked a significant step forward in its literary history. We see the creation of the weekly magazine; the Bulletin and the publication of literary works attempting to encompass what it meant to be Australian. The landscape itself became a character in these works, and several ideals of the 'bushman' came to creation. Egalitarianism and a desire to be free of the suffocating English system was one of these ideals, accompanied by independence, mateship and solidarity. This account reviews several essays on the topic, covering authors with significant influence in the development in early Australian literature. These authors include Henry Lawson, who has come to define the Australian icon of the 'bushman', Barbara Baynton who parodies Lawson's male characters with female protagonists of her own creation. This account also observes the work of Mary Fullerton who stays loyal to the bush ideals but offers a less grim perspective, and finally the work of Kenneth Slessor who can be seen to lead Australian literary tendencies away from this bush legend.
