Bread Givers Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The novel, Bread Givers by Alice Yezierska took place in New York's Lower East Side, during the 1920s. Sara Smolensk was the youngest child in her family. Her father, Reb was an Orthodox Rabbi from the 'old country.' Sara's older sisters; Mashah, and Fania each got married to a man their father picked for them. Bessie, keeps the family together by working hard, and always staying by the family's side, rather than abandoning them. Sara is/was determined to be an American and wanted to make her own choices. The father is very strict and believes in the old ways. He would not let his daughters marry who they fell in love with because if they left, they would not be supported. Reb later found men that he declared were good enough for his daughters and him. These men were liars or gamblers and made his daughters very unhappy. Sara was smart and left her family when she was a teenager. Her father got mad at her for trusting someone with two cents. She was an American child where she could do what she wanted, so she decided to live with her sisters. The problem with this was that none ......
