This article tells about the classmates who graduated from West Point who were forced to turn on each other during the Civil War. However, because of how demanding life at the academy was, they developed a strong companionship for each other that lasted a lifetime, despite the bloody conflict of the Civil War.
The article first describes how life at West Point was. The cadets' lives were strict and demanding. They were given almost no freedom and the few recreations the cadets were allowed to participate in were "all more in the nature of necessities than sports." When today's Spartan regime is compared to this military lifestyle, "today's Spartan regime seems positively relaxed." Everything accomplished at West Point was for the education or training of the cadets. It was because of these though experiences that the cadets developed their permanent relationships with each other. Even through the Civil War their love for each other never wavered.
