In the novel, "Pride and Prejudice", Jane Austen emphasises on the key requirements of a successful marriage. She does this by contrasting various marriages of characters in her novel with the Lizzy/Darcy marriage and pointing out the irony in each case which has positive and negative effects on the individuals. Austen also contrasts the different suitors for Lizzy, showing their ironic ways (what they do and say) proving why Darcy is the perfect match.
Lizzy, a woman, has more power in the Lizzy/Darcy relationship, whereas in unsuccessful relationships the power lies with the males. Lizzy has more power because it is Darcy who falls for her, "a pair of fine eyes in the face of a pretty woman". This gives Lizzy the upper hand in the relationship because she has more control over her feelings, therefore can act more practically and rationally, teasing with Darcy to a certain extent, "taking her hand...when she instantly drew back". On the other hand, Wickham has more power in his relationship as Lydia is "head over heels" over him, "for there is but one man in the world I love, and......
