The Spanish were the first, in the 15th century, to fund explorations to the New World, and then following right in its footsteps were the English. Having found new and desirable goods, the English and Spanish were enticed to claim land in the unknown world. In the 17th century many of the Spanish settlements were concentrated in the south, Mexico and South West American region. The English, on the other hand, focused mainly on settling in the north, New England area and later on more south, staying on the coast. As these two regions began to expand and prosper, economically and politically, they did so in many different ways.
In the 17th century, the Spanish, early on, had an extensive settlement that stretched all across the south west region. Early on, the Spanish had no intentions of creating permanent settlements with women, children, and families.
