The ideal of what is precious varies throughout culture, but in western societies we see a prominence of consumerist items stealing the limelight. The portrayal of these items in the museum habitat can be conceived as a product of modernisation but are these items really 'valuable' enough to dominate archaeological finds? In conjunction with this we also see wealthy items taking pride of place over cultural heritage. This in turn can be interpreted as a reinforcement of the ideologies of wanting and wealth, concepts that come hand in hand with consumerist ideals. Focusing on the idea that consumerism is an important driving force behind how museums are structured and their content 'Value' arose. 'Value' is an alternative exhibition displaying the throw away nature of western cultures ideals of museum content and how it is influenced by consumerist ideologies and consequently what that states about the visitor.
How do we begin to deconstruct the theory that consumerism echoes throughout modern museums? By studying the way in which the western museum presents its collection......
