Reconstruction after the Cival War Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Reconstruction The violence of the Civil War left the south completely destroyed. The landscape, society, and culture of most Confederate states would never be the same. In Louisiana, Reconstruction was begun by William Butler in 1862. Many Louisiana civilians were torn in their views for the future. When some citizens began to support Union control again, other whites just kept resisting any form of reconciling with whom they still considered a northern enemy. Many efforts were made on state and national levels to reconstruct the South and its equalize its' citizens. Many events, whether governemental or violent, led to the reconstruction of Louisiana. William Butler, who was first known as "Beast Butler" for his strong authority in an occupied New Orleans, began Reconstruction-like programs in New Orleans in 1862. He reorganized schools, made citizens take an oath of loyalty to the United States, and fed the civilian population.
