Lincolns and Booth. Before, During and After Assassination Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
It was Good Friday. April 14, 1865. Homes and Buildings in Washington, D.C. were lit up, in celebration of the end of the War Between the North and the South.
Though many believed the beginning of the end came with Confederate General Robert E. Lee riding his horse Traveler, into the town of Appomatox Court House, Virginia, owned by the McCleans; in truth, Confederate soldiers had been as exhausted as Union soldiers, and in addition, were desserting their regiments. There was also a shortage of supplies, and the Union armies out-numbered the Confederates 1-10. Lee was heavy hearted. The last thing he wanted to do was to surrender, but he knew it was time.
Union General Ulysses S. Grant was to accept Lee's surrender, and did, though he was several minutes late. They talked for over an hour and a half. After agreeing to the terms and signing the papers, Lee rode off to a Union Soldiers salute.
Exhilerated by Lee's surrender, Lincoln gave a speech. In his speech, he laid out his plans for the future.
Two days later, the President and his wife made plans to attend the comedi......
