Sometimes the hero of a story is not particularly interesting, clever, or strong. Would you prefer the protagonist of a tale to be a knight in shining armor, a wizard, or a warrior princess? Would you rather read about people just like you and I, who go through developmental stages in life to which we can all relate? If you read about a perfect main character too frequently, do you become exasperated that he or she never makes mistakes and is absolutely flawless in every way? In Alice Munro's short story, "An Ounce of Cure," and John Updike's, "A&P," the two narrators tell about their incidents of falling in love during their adolescent years and suffering the consequences while in that raging hormonal state of their obsession with the opposite sex.
I believe that the authors chose to capture those awkward, coming of age experiences to which nearly everyone can relate; namely, the excitement of infatuation, the humiliation of rejection, and the embarrassment of making irrational, short-term focused decisions.
