Nationalism: A Glimmer of Hope
S. L. Price embarks on a quest to find the truth behind Fidel Castro and his athletic "machine"(240). He journeys to Cuba a few times and conducts interviews with some of Cuba's most respected athletes. He takes their perspective and opinions on subjects such as the importance of sports to the country and defection amongst athletes. Also, he describes how players that defect from Cuba leave behind a trail of pain and suffering for their families and the impact it has on their lives.
In the country of Cuba, athletes are discovered and begin training as young as eight years old. They start at the local EIDE which is a nationwide chain of sports boarding schools and the first stop in the Cuban Sports system. Next if they are good enough the athlete moves on to the local ESPA which is an advanced sports academy. After they have finished their schooling they move on to the Liga de Desarrollo, which is something like America's minor leagues, and finally the national team if they are the best of the best. Almost every child has a dream to become involved......
