DID RECONSTRUCTION ACHIVED THE DESIRE GOALS?
This question has been in the minds of many historians and also the millions of slaves that believed in the principles of the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Lincoln. "The newly freed people, who had long yearned for freedom, greeted the news with much excitement and much celebration." (Kelley & Lewis, 2005, p. 236) How naive were they to think that their struggled had ended. History tells us that their struggled did not end, their struggled continued at a higher price. They fought during the Civil War on both sides, because they had a sense of patriotism, they had a sense of belonging even when they were treated without dignity. Their goal was simple; freedom at any cause.
If slaves had been given plots of land, they could have gained their own financial freedom. They could have planted, cultivated, and harvest their own crops for profit. They had been able to build schools and educate their families. This is a question that we will never be able to answer because the opportunity is gone forever.
