Without a doubt an understanding of social developments is of great value to historians in analyzing and examining intricate histories and cultures such as those of China, Korea and Japan. Although pre-modern China, Korea, and Japan each constituted discrete histories, they on the other hand also displayed various common grounds in terms of how the social hierarchy of classes gradually transformed from one era to another, the establishment of the elite group and its status by utilizing religions, philosophies and education, and the extent of social mobility within social foundations. Whereas social developments in ancient China were analyzed starting from the Shang Dynasty, ca. 1500 to 1045 BCE, to the Song Dynasty, 960 to 1279, pre-modern Korea was examined starting from the Old Choson period, which started at approximately 108 BCE, to the unified Korea of the Koryo Dynasty, 935 to 1171.
