Broken Heart by John Donne Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

John Donne's poem, "The Broken Heart," starts its message with its very title. It hints of heartache and sorrow, and that it's reoccurring subject to be that of unrequited love. In the poem's eight lined, four stanza organizations, the poet addresses the topic of love, showing that the reader's first surmise to be correct, in iambic pentameter and tetrameter. In the first stanza, in literal terms, he believes that anyone who says that they were in love for an hour is insane, not because love is gone so fast, but because love can eat ten people in less than an hour. He doubts anyone will believe him if he said that he had the plague for a year. He deems that people would induce snickers at him if he voiced that he saw a flask of powder burn for a day. In the second, he laments the dilemma a heart would be in if it came into love's hands. He ponders that all grievances are connected, asking for more. Grief comes to people, but Love swallows us whole. Whole ranks die by his administrations, with chained cannonballs, and he the predator (a tyrant pike) and our heart the prey (......
