Do we all really know what we are doing when writing a simple rough draft? According to "Shitty First Drafts" from Anne Lamott's Bird by Bird (NY: Pantheon, 1994) pp.21-26, "No good writers know what they are really doing until they've done it. " Lamott explains why the first rough draft is so important to the process of writing. She gives attest to the feelings of uncertainty and skepticism, feelings that are very familiar to most of us when it comes to writing. The rough draft isn't meant to be perfect. It is the foundation of a paper; a way to shape ideas out without limitations. The article has a lot of evidence of the authors own expert testimony and opinions that makes the reader feel assured that what she is saying has to be true. She also uses similar techniques like popularity to make the reader feel the same way. Some things that didn't work in the author's writings were her stories about her "famous" writer friends that are not proven to be creditable, and her examples that appeals to emotion with her stories about her own hard ......
