Zora Neale Hurston was an African American novelist, folklorist and anthropologist who published many inspiring novels on imaginary and realistic stories of black heritage. One of Hurston's best works of literature is the classic, Their Eyes Were Watching God. This novel is about a beautiful, strong African American woman, Janie, who endures several trials and obstacles while searching for her southern love story. Hurston's novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, reflects the real life and attitudes of Hurston's autobiographical essay, "How It Feels to Be Colored Me". Raised in the entirely colored town of Eatonville, Florida, Hurston grew up with porch watchers who would gladly share what they thought they knew about the town, and she seldom saw any white people unless they were just passing through. Hurston's autobiography, "Colored Me", starts with Hurston remembering when she first "became colored".
