Poetic Techniques and Meanings in Father and Child Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Gwen Harwood once said, "All a poet needs is the journey from innocence to experience." This is seen to be true as the subject matter of her poem 'Father and Child' from the anthology Poems (1963) explores the aforementioned journey. My attitude to poetry has been broadened by my understanding of the integral role poetic devices play in the construction of meaning. I always believed poetry to be a poet's personal experience however this attitude has been challenged as Harwood often does not adopt the persona in her poetry, as exemplified in 'Father and Child' . Instead, Harwood explores universal meanings that can resonate with readers worldwide. Harwood was influenced by religion, philosophy and music therefore reinforcing the musical quality to her poetry and the poignancy of the Biblical allusions she incorporates. The poem 'Father and Child' reflects the journey from innocence to experience and this is reinforced through poetic devices.
