In 1905, General Alfred von Schlieffen devised the Schlieffen plan which Germany would use in 1914. The Schlieffen plan was a bold and courageous plan to knock France swiftly out of any war before using the German army against Russia. For the plan to be successful the German army and its troops had to pass quickly through Belgium; a Neutral State. The major states of Europe had formed themselves into two rival alliances which were â€~equallyâ€TM balanced. Germany and Austria â€" Hungary (the Central Powers) formed the triple Alliances with Italy. They were deemed to be the most important countries for the reason being; they linked all the others together. However France, Russia and Great Britain formed an informal alliance called the â€~Triple Ententeâ€TM along with many countries such as; Brazil, Costa Rica and Cuba. The countries of the Triple Entente fought for whatever their country was fighting for. Finally the Neutral States were on no ones side for example; Sweden, Spain and Norway.
