The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In the book, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, there are many situations that arise due to the culture that the main character, Arnold Spirit, lives in. Arnold, being a Native American and living on the reservation, refuses to become a product of the culture he is raised in and throughout the book tries to prove to others his self worth. Along the way he encounters many trials dealing with death in the family, racism, stereotypes, and loneliness. One thing that stuck out to me in the book was the racial slurs and stereotypes that occurred. After Arnold switched schools it was obvious how much animosity the Indians on the reservation had towards him. His best friend beat him up, everybody booed him when they played basketball against each other, and he was often called derogatory terms such as "Apple," meaning red on the outside but white on the inside. It is easy to see that racism goes both ways and the Native Americans portrayed in this book had very strong feelings about the world off of the reservation.
