Predaceous Diving Beetle Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The scientific name for this insect is "Dytiscidae. Generally, about 1" in length, the diving beetle has six jointed legs; mandibles or jaws; maxillary which are the mouth parts that allow the insect to grasp food; a thorax or middle section where the legs and wings are attached; an abdomen where the heart, reproductive organs, and digestive system are. Lastly, elytra; four wings that protect the hind wings. Adaptations The diving beetle has two hind wings for flying or swimming. These long wings can easily be folded under the beetle's elytra. The electra are hardened four wings that protect the long hind wings. The adult stage of the beetle capture an air bubble behind her wings as an underwater air supply. The beetle can stay under water many minutes because of the air bubble that acts like a diver's tank. The beetle takes in a lot of oxygen; dissolved oxygen from the water diffuses into the bubble to replace it. This gives it more air supply; so it can remain under water quite a while. This is good because he does most of his work underwater----hunting, eating, matin......
