Introduction
When elaborating on the statement "Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is philanthropy at other people's expense", this paper will start off by addressing the context in which the statement has been presented in the article "Two-faced Capitalism" (The economist, 2004).
It has become a common opinion amongst CEOs, eco-warriors and NGOs that environmental and social issues matter and that profit is not the only important variable when measuring a company's success. However, there is no agreement about how. CSR should be performed by companies.
The question with CSR is whether it is ethical or not to use CSR as a tool for profit-maximization. Those in favour of CSR debates how unethical it is not to make CSR profit-maximizing because the company is using their shareholder's money to raise charity, while non-profitable CSR would be the same as taking money from their accumulated profit.
Critics of CSR are NGOs who disagree with CSR being non-compulsory. They argue that politicians should take responsibility for deciding how many resources companies should spend on cha......
