True diversity: Ethics development, understanding and application; what does that all mean? Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
This paper starts with a definition of what ethics are, and how they differ from moral beliefs and values; it further goes on to discuss what my ethics are, what has influcenced the developement of those ethics; how I manifest them and what implications they have on the decisions I make.
Ruggiero (1997) states, "Ethics is the study of right and wrong conduct" (pg 4). He further goes on to say, "The focus of ethics is moral situations" (pg 5), and I wholeheartedly agree. It is my opinion that ethics is a word used by governments and corporations as a substitute for morals. Seriously, I am not sure I ever used the word ethical until I went to work for a large corporation.
Honesty, integrity and citzenship is the focus of my employer's ethical awareness. Easy enough for me to practice, those are all moral beliefs and values as far as I am concerned. If that is the case, then what is the difference between ethics, moral beliefs and values? Actually, I believe the difference comes into play upon the application of those beliefs and values. As I stated in the previous paragraph......
