Background to Lewis Morris The family of Lewis Morris was of Welsh descent. Early in the colonial era, the Morris family saw the enormous opportunities in the New World and moved their vast estate to the colony of New Jersey. (David McDonald, 2002) It was here that Lewis was born on April 8, 1726. Lewis' early years are rather unremarkable for such a man destined for greatness.
