It's a free country. We've all heard that phrase since grade school, usually as an attitude filled, one line comeback. But the truth is that no country can be completely free. Laws are put in place by our government to protect the needs and the safety of the citizens. Without laws, the country would crumble in it's anarchist state. The only problem is that the eye of the court can often only see in black and white, when in this world many situations come in shades of gray. Sometimes there is a need to do what's morally just, to act on the inner voice of good conscience. Occasionally, doing what's right can mean putting oneself at risk, or sometimes even breaking the law. It was hot that summer. The type of sticky, persistent heat that could be thoroughly enjoyed on some distant beach with a glistening sea foam green, cocktail umbrella toting drink in hand. Wouldn't have been so awful then. But when your job is to clear trees or remove large limbs and drag those limbs up the biggest hill in sight to the awaiting angry, screaming wood chipper, the heat is not so welcomed......
