Poets Marge Piercy and Sylvia Plath are women of talent, whose poems often concern society's impact on women. "Barbie Doll" and "Mirror" are both powerful poems about females; how women see themselves and how society sees their imperfections. Piercy's poem focuses more on the how society perceives beauty while Plath's poem focuses on how women perceive society's view of beauty. Piercy's poem deals with a girl maturing into a woman whom society does not see as attractive, whereas Plath's poem is about a woman looking in a mirror everyday seeing herself age. There are several similarities that connect the two poems together as well some differences. The contrast true beauty and societal beauty can be compared in these two poems through their subjects, use of symbolism, and use of satire towards societal views. "Barbie Doll" appeals to the younger generation of females who are just beginning to mature into young women.
