In her article "The More You Subtract, the More You Add. Cutting Girls Down to Size" Jean Kilbourne describes the influence on teenagers by media and especially the role of media in girls` life. It is obvious for Kilbourne that media or mass communication puts a strong pressure on young people when they are developing their values (Kilbourne 2000: 258-259). She is talking about what part media plays when adolescents are developing bad and dangerous behavior like drinking too much alcohol, smoking cigarettes and girls falling into the vicious circle by taking excessive care about their outward appearance (Kilbourne 2000: 260). Beside the role of media Kilbourne also mentions that the environmental surroundings of teenagers like their family, peer-groups and society are playing an additional part for explaining their behavior (Kilbourne 2000: 260-261).
