Castro and his July 26 Movement aimed to remove the dictator Batista. In 1959, they achieved this by their revolution. Castro wanted Cuba to be liberated from the US and have more independence, as Cuba heavily relied on the US for support. This was achieved to a degree by 1968, although due partially to the US Trade Embargo, Cuba relied heavily on the Soviet Union at that point. Castro and his followers also dreamt of a classless society, which led to Cuba's socialism. In 1968, communism became national policy and their dream of a classless society had been accomplished. Castro's belief in equality and fairness led to his social reforms. Castro thought education and healthcare should be free and available to all and by 1968 had achieved this goal.
