The Comparison of Feral Dogs and Wolves Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

If a group of once domesticated dogs were set in the wild, would they take on the same or similar traits as wolves? After all dogs and wolves are the same species. But can they relearn how to survive without food and shelter? Take the dingoes, a type of Australian dog, they have been in the wild for a few generations and are starting to thrive. The dingoes relearned how to hunt and find shelter and now they are no longer considered feral (Price 1984). I will be referring to dogs living in the wild with no food, shelter or direct human contact as feral dogs. Considering feral dogs are few in number and avoid human contact, some of the traits are hypotheses from the behaviors of stray dogs. Stray dogs live in cities and towns and depend indirectly on humans for food. By all taxonomic criteria, wolves and dogs are the same species, the difference being the human domestication process. Most authors agree that "owned", "stray", and "feral" dogs are not closed categories and that dogs may change their status throughout their lives (Scott and Causey 1973, Nesbitt 1975).
