To gain insight into the behavior and life of the individuals and the society in the short story "By the Waters of Babylon," the author Steven Vincent Benet creates a convincing main character. Benet depicts the protagonist as one who travels on a forbidden journey to lands unknown - a journey that tests his morals and beliefs. According to the three principles of characterization, the protagonist, John, is a realistic and convincing character. He is also plausible and life-like. John's journey and experiences lead the reader to ponder his desire and his quest for knowledge which is apparent consistently throughout the story.
John is a consistent character. He constantly displays a spiritual attitude and behavior throughout the story no matter the situation. Before he sets off on his journey, John "pray[s] and purif[ies] [him]self, waiting for a sign" from the gods.
