For Edna Pontellier awakening is a three stage process that fails and leads to her committing suicide. While on Grand Isle Edna experiences a discovery stage of awaking, realizing what could be possible. Once back in New Orleans she begins testing her social and personal boundaries. The final step of her awakening ultimately fails when she ends her pursuit of self by committing suicide.
In the beginning of The Awakening, while at Grand Isle, Edna Pontellier is much like a child figuring out where her boundaries are. Starting in even the opening chapter Edna has, in a minor way begun to push, by swimming too long in the hot sun with Robert. This opening act earns her a rebuke from her husband that is reminiscent of a child that has touched a hot stove and should know better. By the first night of the story Edna begins to recognize a vague anguish entering her, after she fails to show her husband LĂ©once satisfactory mothering skills.
During the summer on Grand Isle Edna begins to discover herself as an artist. Struck by the mood and the subject of Madame Ratignolle Edna......
