Bringing Up Baby, directed by Howard Hawks, is a screwball comedy that details the unlikely love story of a zoologist, David (Cary Grant), and a wealthy and beautiful woman, Susan (Katherine Hepburn). The film mocks the stereotypical gender roles that were present during this time period and also pokes fun at the contrast between the city and the countryside. The men in the movie are made out to be fools, while the women are dominating and controlling. The city is identified as a serious work place, while Connecticut is full of foolish characters and even crazier situations.
The use of costumes in Bringing up Baby allows the viewer to get a greater insight into the characters minds. At the beginning of the movie David is portrayed as a childish, idiotic man who is controlled by his fiancée. David's inability to hold an authoritative position with the women in his life, his physical awkwardness, and his foolish costumes represent the degradation of men.
