Death of a Salesman - Unattainable Dream Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Some people say that if you work hard enough for something, it will be your's in time. There are instances, however, when hard work is not all that is necessary. In Arthur Millers Death of a Salesman, the main character, Willy Loman, travels a long and bumpy road with hopes of attaining the American Dream. Despite a lifetime of hard work, Willy failed to take hold of that dream. Willy set out on the wrong path, leads a misguided life, and aspires to the wrong dreams; which results in this fruitless pursuit of the American Dream. Willy grew up without a father figure, his father and older brother, Ben, left him at a very young age. He holds tight to the limited memories he has of them; their last words help pave the path that Willy will eventually follow. Ben's words of advice: "Why boys, when I was seventeen I walked into the jungle, and when I was twenty-one I walked out. And by God I was rich" are the basis of the beliefs that Willy adopts for himself and his family. This allows Willy to assume that he will not have to search for his American Dream; it will find him.
