When parliament began taxing the colonists in 1764, it had great importance in prompting the rebellion. The first law passed by parliament without the consent of colonists to raise tax revenue for the British crown was during that year called the Sugar Act. It consisted of taxes on sugar, coffee, indigo, silk, and wine. It also hurt colonial trading, which enabled chaos to occur. The colonists rioted, boycotted, and broke into British homes. The next act that was enacted was the Stamp Act in 1765. This was the first direct tax on the colonists and stated that newspapers, cards, and other documents require a paid stamp. Colonists were outraged and started a Stamp Act Congress, which addressed this problem. Colonists also formed the Sons Of Liberty, who tortured the stamp agents until parliament finally revoked the Stamp Act. Then came the Townshend Acts in 1767, which put taxes on glass, lead, paper, and tea.
