The Pearl' by Jonh Steinbeck is a story that teaches moral lesson. It is made up of three major characters including Kino, Juana, and Coyotito and other minor characters, such as Juan Tomas, Apolonia, Doctor, Trackers, The Buyers, The Priest, and so on. Among all characters, i admire Juana the most, because in the story she played two important roles: Kino's traditional, superstitious, determined, and patient wife as well as Coyotito's responsible, protective, and careful mother. However, her roles were not valued by the society in which she lived. To my way of thinking, there are two main reasons why the society disvalues her roles. Culture is the first significant reason that brings the society considers Juana's roles worthless. Manifestly, in chapter 2 and 3, when Kino and Juana found the great pearl of the world, only Kino expressed his feeling and dreams. For Juana, she probably had her dreams as well, but maybe because during that time women were not allowed to display their feeling, so she might not dare to give out her feeling and dreams as Kino.
