Taxing on the colonists was brought to America by the British Parliament, creating many altercations throughout the colonies. First came the Sugar Act, putting tariffs on foreign sugars and certain luxuries. Following the Sugar Act was the Stamp Act placing taxes on all legal documents, pamphlets, newspapers, and ads. Lastly was the Townshend Acts which placed taxes on imports of tea, glass, and paper. All of these revenues, or tax measures contributed to the idea of no taxation without representation, becoming the symbol for democracy and the force that motivated the American Revolution.
Benefiting the British mainly, the Sugar Act placed upon the Americans an increases tax and put a stop to all of the smuggling. With taxes placed only on imported foreign sugar and other luxuries, protests, if any, were minor. As part of the inspiration for becoming a democracy, the Sugar Act helped the Americans to find their independence, and reach towards separation from Britain.
