Romance is always changing and morphing to the current social norms. Social norms change over time, and with this, behavioral habits and standards change. Courtship and romance have changed over time along with the pace of life, social norms, and society has changed over time.
The social norms for my grandparent's generation were very different from these of my parents and my generation. Back in the 40's and 50's most women were housewives and rarely ever worked outside of the home. Men were the providers, and often held the dominant role in the relationship. Back then men and woman married a lot earlier in their lives, often immediately after high school, followed shortly by beginning families. These marriages often lasted through adult life till death. Another significant difference between my grandparent's generation and mine is that couple rarely had sex before they became married.
